What is a kalimba?

A kalimba, also known as a thumb piano or mbira, is a small percussion instrument originating from Africa. It consists of a wooden or metal board with metal tines of varying lengths attached to it. The tines are plucked with the thumbs to produce musical notes.

Kalimbas are often played in a rhythmic and repetitive manner, creating soothing and melodic sounds. They are popular instruments in traditional African music, but have also gained popularity in contemporary world music and fusion genres.

Kalimbas come in various shapes and sizes, with some having as few as 5 tines and others having up to 17 tines. They are relatively easy to learn to play, making them a great instrument for beginners and experienced musicians alike. Kalimbas are often used for meditation, relaxation, and therapeutic purposes due to their calming and soothing sound.
